My name is Eleni Theodoridou and I live in the UK where I work as a Special Needs Teacher.

Unfortunately, not all the people are lucky enough to be born in places where their right and access in health and education are granted. There are people and young children in different areas around the world who are struggling even for those necessities. Next December one of those places will be my destination. I will be travelling in Tanzania and more specifically in the village of Gongo. There, I will participate in a large group of volunteers who in cooperation with the local community, SANA and the Greek volunteer organisation Wheeling2Help will take part in a project in order to improve women's health during menstruation.

For about 2 weeks, we will leave all our comforts in order to contribute in the construction of a workplace aiming at the production of Maisha pads, which are sustainable sanitary pads. The aim of this project is not only to offer a source of income for the women in the local community but to improve the menstrual hygiene of women. Many girls and women in Tanzania as well as in many places in Africa are struggling to have access in female sanitary products and towels as a result to be excluded from many daily activities, such as their work or school. 

My addition to the project

As part of the project our volunteer group will be visiting the local school in Gongo, which hosts 450 students. After contacting the SANA organisation, I have been informed about the big shortage of school in books and essential resources. However, one of the biggest struggle of the student is the access to meals which affects both their health and learning. Children in Gongo have to walk approximately 6 to 10 km to school everyday, making it difficult for them to return home during breaks, consequently, they remain at school without anything to eat for hours.

Hence, the aim of this campaign is to raise money in order to cover some of the students’ needs and offer them access to a more decent education.

Ονομάζομαι Ελένη Θεοδωρίδου, ζω και δουλέυω σαν ειδική παιδαγωγός στο Birmingham της Αγγλίας.

Δυστυχώς δεν είναι όλοι οι άνθρωποι τυχεροί να έχουν γεννηθεί σε χώρες όπου αγαθά όπως η Υγεία και η Εκπαίδευση δεν είναι μόνο δεδομένα αλλά θεωρούνται και ως δικαίωμα. Υπάρχουν συνάνθρωποί μας που έχουν γεννηθεί σε γωνιές του πλανήτη που τέτοια αγαθά φαντάζουν μόνον σαν όνειρο σε παραμύθι.

Σε μια τέτοια γωνιά του πλανήτη,  στην Τανζανία, θα με  βρει ο Δεκέμβρης και συγκεκριμένα στο χωριό Gongo. Εκεί, σε συνεργασία με τον οργανισμό SANA και το Wheeling2help, θα συμβάλουμε στο χτίσιμο ενός κέντρου παραγωγής επαναχρησιμοποιούμενων προϊόντων γυναικείας υγιεινής. Στόχος της δημιουργίας του κέντρου είναι, πέρα από την προσφορά εργασίας για τις γυναίκες της τοπικής κοινότητας, είναι η βελτίωση της υγιεινής των γυναικών κατά τη διάρκεια  της έμμηνης ρύσης. Οι γυναίκες και τα κορίτσια της κοινότητας, αλλά και πολλών περιοχών στην Τανζανία, αδυνατούν να έχουν πρόσβαση σε είδη υγιεινής, με αποτέλεσμα να αποκλείονται από δραστηριότητες, όπως η εργασία και το σχολείο, κατά την περίοδο αυτή.

Μια μικρή συνεισφορά στο υπάρχον project.

Ταυτόχρονα και με αφορμή το παραπάνω project η ομάδα θα επισκεφθεί το σχολείο της τοπικής κοινότητας του Gongo. Μετά από επαφή μου με τον οργανισμό SANA, ενημερώθηκα ότι πέρα από βασικές ελλείψεις σε βιβλία και εξοπλισμό, πολλοί από τους 450 μαθητές που φοιτούν εκεί πρέπει να περπατήσουν 6-10 χιλιόμετρα  για να φτάσουν στο σχολείο. Με αποτέλεσμα,  να μην μπορούν να πάνε σπίτι ενδιάμεσα, παραμένοντας πολλές ώρες στο σχολείο χωρίς πρόσβαση σε φαγητό.

Η συγκεκριμένη καμπάνια στόχο έχει τη συγκέντρωση χρημάτων για την κάλυψη των παραπάνω αναγκών.

Τα χρήματα θα διατεθούν στον οργανισμό SANA, για την αντίστοιχη αξιοποίηση τους.

Όποια συνεισφορά, όσο και μικρή, είναι σημαντική για να βοηθήσουμε τα παιδιά του GONGO,  κορίτσια και αγόρια, να έχουν πρόσβαση σε μια πιο ποιοτική εκπαίδευση.
