Description

In June, 2019 researchers from around the world will converge in Paros, Greece to attend the 1st Annual Symposium on the Greeks.

With your help, we can ensure that Greek Nationals are front and centre, presenting their research findings to an international audience. Who better to represent the Greeks, past and present, than Greek researchers themselves?

The Greeks: glorified and exalted throughout history as the progenitors of Western philosophy and political thought, remain today either impugned or celebrated, and thus continue to form the basis of thought and action in human affairs. For thousands of years, the Hellenes have taken the rest of the world on an extraordinary odyssey and along the way given us the conceptual language of critique so that we may exercise the reasoned self-reflexivity needed for meaningful social and political change.

With the hustle and bustle of contemporary life, however, few of us have a free moment to listen to the voice of Nana Mouskouri or read the books of Nikos Kazantzakis, let alone study the astronomy of Hypatia or meta-theorize the comedies of Aristophanes. From Agamemnon to Zorba, from Antigone to Zeus, we know the Greeks have left their lasting legacy, but without making a point of learning more about Hellenistic culture, we miss the opportunity to reconnect with the history of thought. This Symposium on the Greeks is an opportunity for those who wish to make time for a careful reading, and rethinking of the origin of our ideas and values; to gather together and discuss the ways in which the Greeks continue to influence our present and inform our future.

A Symposium to celebrate the enduring relevance of the Greeks. Help us make sure Greek researchers are the main focus.

The Symposium on The Greeks in Paros, Greece, is an international, multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary event whose aim is to bring together people from a variety of fields to explore and examine the relevance of the Greeks today from artistic, cinematic, ethical, literary, political, philosophical, social and religious perspectives. We invite academics, scholars, creators, performers and historians, artists and archaeologists, poets and economists to contribute their knowledge of all things Greek.

PLEASE HELP US TO PAY FOR THE REGISTRATION, TRAVEL & ACCOMMODATION EXPENSES OF GREEK NATIONALS WHO WISH TO ATTEND THIS SYMPOSIUM. EVERY CENT OF YOUR CONTRIBUTION WILL GO DIRECTLY TO DEFRAYING THESE COSTS SO THAT GREEK NATIONALS CAN SHOWCASE THEIR WORK TO AN INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE.

The approximate cost for a Symposiast to travel to and attend the conference is 1000 euro. WITH YOUR HELP, WE CAN SPONSOR 50 GREEK NATIONALS AND EXPOSE THEIR RESEARCH TO AN INTERNATIONAL AUDIENCE. THE ENDURING IMPACT ON KNOWLEDGE PRODUCTION AND ONGOING COLLABORATIONS FOR THESE RESEARCHERS WILL BE PRICELESS.

  • Because of your donations...

Because of your generous donations we were able to invite artisan and performer Yannis Pantazis for a musical presentation at Symposium on the Greeks, Paros, 2019. In "Odysseus Returns" Yannis creates an interactive musical journey using mythological narration and fifteen hand-crafted instruments, including the Tsabouna, an ancient Greek bagpipe made of goatskin and bone.

To see more of the incredible work Yannis does at his workshop, Symposion Santorini, please visit: https://www.symposionsantorini.com/

Please help us sponsor more talented Greek Nationals like Yannis by sharing our Give and Fund campaign.
